“Chiropractic is about health and fitness and there is such a strong relationship between the two. This is why I’m so excited to have the chiropractors here from all over the world each year, because you represent exactly the same thing. Chiropractic is about health and fitness. Chiropractic is about natural, preventive health care. It can help families be healthier and also spend time together doing something important to all their lives. What we’re trying to do is not just promote the sport of bodybuilding, but fitness and health. Fitness, for us, is everything in a naturally healthy lifestyle. So that’s why it is so great for us to work together.”
—– Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California
Governor Schwarzenegger has been perhaps the biggest advocate of chiropractic the profession has ever known.
“I am very fortunate to have, so to speak, my in-house chiropractor, Dr. Franco Colombu, as my own personal chiropractor. He adjusts my wife, my kids, me, everybody gets an adjustment. And we feel always great when Franco leaves. Even when I have athletic injuries, he’s always there for me and helps me. That’s why I always will be traveling … all over the world, talking highly about the profession of chiropractic. You chiropractic doctors are really miracle workers,” explained the Governor.
He is not the only Governor of California to be an advocate for chiropractic. President Ronald Reagan was also a supporter of chiropractic.
The list of chiropractic supporters is like a who’s who book. Famous athletes from Tiger Woods to Michael Jordan have long known the benefits of chiropractic. Entertainers from Clint Eastwood to John Travolta are also chiropractic advocates.
The best advocates for chiropractic are the regular millions of chiropractic patients. These are the everyday people that get relief from the pain by using chiropractic treatment.
Dr. Steven Read of Ortega Chiropractic Clinic in Jacksonville Florida has launched a new web site. “It is my own version of an economic stimulus plan,” he explained.
By going to http://www.FreeExamJacksonville.com, a person can instantly download a certificate for a FREE, no cost, no obligation initial visit. This includes a chiropractic consultation, examination, and medically necessary x-rays.
Dr. Read has practiced in Jacksonville for over 20 years. He has treated thousands of patients from all over the city including the Westside, Riverside, Ortega, Orange Park and Argyle. To reach Dr. Read, call 904-425-4545.

Lately there has been a rash of inaccurate reports about the safety of chiropractic. Most of these reports come from “groups” that are already opposed to chiropractic treatment. And all of these reports are ignoring the actual studies proving how safe and effective chiropractic truly is.
A study in the Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics proved the safety of chiropractic in treating lumbar disc herniations. The study was designed to determine the risk of spinal manipulation causing a severe adverse reaction in a patient presenting with a lumbar disk herniation.
This study showed that the risk of spinal manipulation causing a clinically worsened disk herniation was less than 1 in 3.7 million. Compare this to epidural injections which have an adverse reaction rate of 2-5%. Even more interesting is lumbar disc surgery can have adverse reactions in over 10% of the time with the surgery either failing to improve a patient’s symptoms or make them worse about half the time.
“After a thorough evaluation, I will adjust most of my patients that have a lumbar disc herniation,” explained Dr. Steven Read, Clinic Director of Ortega Chiropractic Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. “Every case is different and I evaluate each case differently, but about 85% of my patients receive some type of improvement, “he added.
Dr. Read went on to explain that he also uses spinal decompression and other physical therapy and exercise techniques to achieve his success.
“There are certain instances when I have referred patients for epidural injections and surgery, but those instances are very rare and should always be a last resort, but is very important to have all back pain, especially pain that radiates into the shoulders, arms, hips or legs properly evaluated,” he stated.
In conclusion, studies have proved how safe and effective chiropractic is in treating lumbar disc herniations. In addition, studies have also shown it to be very cost-effective. With all the scientific proof, chiropractic should be the first plan of treatment for lumbar disc herniations.

Nearly 90% of people that have used chiropractic treatment said it helped a lot, according to a new report in the May 2009 Consumer Reports Magazine.
About 80% of all adult Americans have at some point been bothered by some form of back pain. In a new Consumer Reports survey over 14,000 acknowledged some form of back pain over the last year. More than half of these people complained the pain severely limited their daily routine for a week or longer. Many had explained that the pain interfered with sleep, sex and their ability to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.
The respondents average trying five to six different forms of treatment. Chiropractic treatment was considered the most successful form of treatment according to this survey. Physical therapy and massage were also found to be helpful.
“Our patients have always seemed to respond to our team approach of chiropractic, medicine, physical therapy and massage therapy,” explained Dr. Steven Read, Clinic Director of Ortega Chiropractic and Medical Rehab in Jacksonville, Florida. “Our patients get the best of all worlds in our clinic,” he added. “We have launched a new website FreeExamJacksonville.com to offer everyone in the Jacksonville area a way to find out if chiropractic treatment can help them for free,” said Dr. Read.

It has been a long time since I have blogged here. I have written some blogs for other sites though.

We recently had a patient that came to us following an automobile accident. We weren’t their first choice. They called an 800 number referral line and was referred to an attorney in Miami. That’s right Miami.

In addition they weren’t happy with the medical treatment they were receiving. The moral to this brief story is:

If you have been injured in an automobile accident, why not call a local number? The 800 numbers aren’t answered here and there is a good chance you get referred to a South Florida attorney.

Jacksonville has some very good lawyers and health care providers. IF you have any questions, you can always call our office at 425-4545 (local number) or check out our websites..www.OrtegaChiropractic.com or http://www.FreeExamJacksonville.com.

Yours in Health,

Steve

We hope these things make us a little different then most offices.

What do you think?

Chiropractors use all different kinds of techniques to adjust the spine. Some techniques work better fo some patients. Just because one chiropractor doesn’t help, doesn’t mean that chiropractic has failed.

Case in point, we are treating a patient now with flexion distraction technique (a specific way of stretching the spine and discs). She was seeing another chiropractor using a different technique. She is making great progress with flexion distraction adjustments. Every person reacts differently.

The State of Florida is about to let mandatory automobile insurance ride off into the “sunset”. That decision would be much better than then some of the ideas they are debating now. The worst idea (no doubt written by the insurance industry) is that if a person involved in an accident does not go to the emergency room within 72 hours of the accident, insurance is not responsible for paying for any damages. Having helped thousands of people that have been injured in accidents, maybe 5% of these warrant a visit to the emergency room. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Florida Legislature passes a law where insurance is mandatory, but also insurance companies are forbidden from paying any money out. When democrats and republicans agree on something like this, you know there is a lot of money floating around.

As a Chiropractic Clinic in Jacksonville, we are so fortunate to have great practice members (patients). Our patients are awesome, and we always ask if there is more than we can do to make their experience in our practice better.

We have just updated our website (www.ortegachiropractic.com). Our established practice members and prospective practice members can now schedule appointments  through our website. It is an easy process. Takes about 15 seconds. Just click on the link on the front page.

If our practice members ever have any ideas to make our practice better, we are always open for suggestions.

One of the biggest arguments that the “established” medical industry uses agaisnt chiropractic and other so-called alternative forms of heath care is our lack of research.

There is so much research that has been completed that demonstrates the effectivenss of chiropractic. Most of the research has been done by the medical establishment.

Chiropractic manipulation has been shown in numerous studies to be the most effective form of treatment for neck pain, headahces and low back pain.

I still find it the epitome of hypocrisy to question the research regarding chiropractic. They should really police their industry a little closer. I always ask…”How is that Vioxx working out?”

Todays new miracle drug is tomorrows next class action law-suit.
